Time to Make Your Coffee Healthier

how to make coffee healthy

That time of year is upon us once again, New Years. The time where we all set unrealistic resolutions to lose weight, exercise more, or save money; sound all to familiar to you too. Well what if I told you that was possible all by changing the way you drink your cup of coffee or espresso in the morning? Would you believe me?

You should because its true! In this post I am gong to tell you how you can live a healthier and happier lifestyle all by changing the way you drink your coffee. Now I know there is a group out there promoting this Bulletproof Coffee kick, not knocking it, but that isn’t what we are talking about here. If want to learn more about bulletproof coffee check out my recent post on it.

Small habits, repeated daily compound over time! By changing a few of the little things you do everyday you can make a big impact on your health and live a happier longer life. Lets start with your coffee! Follow along with these simple little choices to get your day started off right with a healthy cup of coffee

Get Rid of the Sugar in your coffee

If you were only going to change one thing about your cup of coffee this would be it. Ever wonder why all those delicious drinks at Starbucks are packed with over 500 calories? Its simple, those lovely tasting syrups they put in your pumpkin spice latte are full of sugar. Isn’t it time we stepped away from the calories and went with something a little more classy? Imagine this: If you were in line at Starbucks and you had George Clooney standing behind you, would you rather him hear you order a Salted Carmel Mocha with extra whip and salt or …. a Café Americano with room?

You don’t have to answer that.

Also, make sure you are careful of sugar alternatives, as tempting as they may seem several of them contain chemicals and hormones my dog wouldn’t allow around his body, let alone mine. The best choice is no sugar at all, I know I know it will be hard but you will thank me later.

Stay away from the milk

No milk in my coffee, are you for real right now? Yes, yes I am for real; back to our previous example, starbucks. At Sbux they use whole milk in their drinks which lightens and thickens the coffee like most of us are used to. Next time you are at the supermarket pickup a half-gallon of unsweetened almond milk or coconut milk. These two great alternatives go great with coffee and give you a rich nutty aroma we are used to in our coffee.

Tip:  make sure you grab the no sugar added almond or coconut milk!

Flavor your coffee with natural flavors, not syrup or sugar

Not to rain on your parade again, but you really need to kick the habit of putting all those syrups and sugars in your cup of joe. What no more pumpkin spice lattes!! Are you serious! Guess what, have you tried pumpkin pie spice in your coffee it tastes the same and is healthy for ya. Even better you can use local honey or a couple drops of vanilla extract to sweeten up you cup of coffee.

Come over to the Darkside, drink dark roast

Need a reason, check out this recent quote from

“New research in Molecular Nutrition & Food Research found that dark roast coffee restored blood levels of the antioxidants vitamin E and glutathione more effectively than light roast coffee. The dark roast also led to a significant body weight reduction in pre-obese volunteers, whereas the light roast did not.”

Dark roast coffee helps you lose weight and prevent cancer causing cells, what better reason do you need to switch? Dark roast it is then.

I hope you enjoyed my light hearted attempt and tips to help you make your coffee healthy. As mentioned in the beginning some very minute small changes can have a major impact on your health and lifestyle.
