Formed in 1927, Rancilio has always been considered to be one of the world’s leading Italian Espresso machine manufacturers. But it wasn’t only the quality of Espresso alone which catapulted Rancilio on to popularity tables, because they offered the users something which was often missing with even the biggest brands in industry.
The time when Rancilio came into the espresso business, there were faced with one of the toughest challenges ever. Because despite being only three decades old, the espresso industry was spreading like a wildfire around the world and none of the major players were in the mood for making any room. So to take a large chunk out of the ever growing industry, they started offering people some of the toughest machines and best looking machines which were distributed to the masses through an elaborate distribution network , which would go on to become the company’s trademark.
Even though I rarely talk of any company’s marketing strategy to reach the top, I was truly amazed when I first came across the company’s biography. Because never before had I seen a company, who took their dedication to provide users with a reliable and good looking machine and evolve into one of the major players in this multi-billion dollar industry. And today almost 90 years later, Rancilio has managed to recreate the magic again with the Rancilio HSD-SILVIA Silvia Espresso Machine which has gone on to become one of the most popular espresso machines for homes. But this meeting with this Italian beauty would be incomplete without my self-proclaimed best in the world review.
The Spec Sheet
Before Rancilio made waves around the world with the Rancilio HSD-SILVIA Silvia Espresso Machine, they spend a good part of the last 10 years in attempts of developing a fully automated espresso machine. And even though they didn’t succeed completely in their attempts to introduce the world to a fully automated espresso machine, they did manage to win the heart of millions of users with the Rancilio HSD-SILVIA Silvia Espresso Machine. But none of this would have been possible without the HSD-SILVIA’s list of features which is as follows:

What I Liked
While inspecting the Rancilio HSD-SILVIA, I was truly amazed the simplicity with which this espresso machine was created and after all these years, I could finally understand why people around the world went gaga over this espresso machine. Even though this machine looked extremely simple compared to its peers and did not come packed with a long list of features which you would require you to do book keeping just for keeping track, I was rather impressed with what it could do. But like always, I did manage to find out a couple of things which I did like a little bit more than the others.
The first thing which I liked about the Rancilio HSD-SILVIA, would have to be the commercial grade group heads which allowed me to have full control over the heat stability and the quality of extraction. Now a lot of people might not feel that these two features are that important to add to my review, but people who have had previous experience in handling espresso machines would understand how important it is to have some control over your espresso machine while brewing your espresso. Because, the inability to have any control over heat and the quality of extraction are the two major reasons which causes unwanted breakdowns and low grade espresso.
Moving on to the next thing which I liked about the Rancilio HSD-SILVIA Silvia Espresso Machine, would definitely have to be the steam knob which allowed me to have the frothiest cappuccinos and lattes. Yes many modern espresso machines do grant you fully automated control to the frother with only a push of the button, but it’s nowhere near as fun as having complete control over your frother to the degree of 0.001%. Which means, that whenever you feel you could use a little more froth for your cappuccino’s or lattes, just turn on the nozzle, adjust the knob and tada, you have it.
What I Didn’t Like
After reviewing the Rancilio HSD-SILVIA, the only thing I did not like about it would have to be the missing automated features. Because, no matter how much I love a traditional Italian Espresso machines, a little automated feature can never do any harm. Which is why, I would suggest that Rancilio should consider adding on some automated features to the next SILVIA.
The Final Verdict
The final verdict for me would definitely have to be, that if you love a classic cup of Italian Espresso and don’t mind earning it, then there is perhaps no better machine than the Rancilio HSD-SILVIA.
